Drink coasters generally don’t get very much attention. They are small and subtle, acting as tiny barriers between your possessions, and the messes that can ruin them. Water damages most table tops, and scratches are a permanent headache. Coasters leap into action when such dangers approach, acting as barrier, protectors, and even guardians of your home accessories.

The coaster can also serve another, more decorative purpose in the home. Despite being small, they come in sets, usually matched, and these sets can be spread out throughout the space, carrying their unique colors and patterns to every inch of the environment. Being mobile, these colors move about, shifting with the flow of activity, carrying tones and ambiance to every corner of the space.

Once the coasters have spread out, suddenly the colors imprinted on the surface become vitally important, because those colors are everywhere, casting a subtle but potent web over the environment. This allows these pieces to actually become quite prominent, dominating to some extent the visual landscape of the room, and spreading their own unique charm to every inch of the space. That is why it is important to choose these pieces with such care.

There are a wide variety of styles to choose from. Many are made from absorbent materials, such as sandstone or cork. Others are made from impermeable materials, but are equipped with a ring or lip, which holds any moisture in place. It is important to consider both the appearance of the coaster, and the functionality of the piece when making a decision on which set to purchase.
