The introduction of the bagless vacuum cleaner by Dyson has really shaken the market up. Before that came out then they were all pretty much the same, so you just decided which brand you liked the most and which model looked the best, and you could be happy with that. Now the market has exploded and there are all sorts of crazy designs and technology to sift through.

So now the humble vacuum cleaner has been dressed up in a wild melody of colours and has been given fancy names and even fancier attachments for even the most obscure of tasks. But do we need all that? Most of us are perfectly happy with a simple cleaner with a bag like we used to have. Below we look at the main choices you have when buying a new vacuum:

Bagless: This is the design which turned the industry on its head, and when you think of a bagless cleaner then you have to think of Dyson who pioneered the technology, although other manufacturers have now imitated the design and brought out their own versions. The jury is still out on whether bagless is better, some people love it, and some hate it. It might not lose suction as it fills up like a bagged model is supposed to, but then you do have to take the plastic container out and empty all that dust and dirt into a bag/bin yourself, which makes a mess and is not good if you have allergies.

Upright: This is the most common design for a vacuum cleaner, with all the mechanics in an upright column at the back. The advantage of this is that it is easy to get at the bag when it needs changing, and you can use the weight of the upright part to push the head along as you clean, so it is easy to cover large open areas of carpet with it.

Canister vacuum: The canister design is the smaller vacuum that is on the floor with a long hose attachment coming out of it. This is better for houses and rooms that have a lot of furniture and not much open floor space. With an upright then you can quickly do large areas, but you struggle when you need to get under tables and chairs etc. With a canister model then you can easily get under furniture as the hose is a lot longer and the unit is smaller and easier to drag around, but doing large areas with them is a chore.

Carpet cleaner: The final option is getting a machine to shampoo your carpets, although this should be in addition to a normal cleaner because one of these units cannot suck up dirt like a normal vacuum cleaner. Instead it uses a mixture of shampoo and water that you put into it and injects that into the carpet and works it in with brushes to agitate the dirt. Then you go over the area again and it sucks all the dirty water up out of the carpet to give them a really deep clean and bring them back to what they looked like when you first bought them. These units are often quite cheap and can be a great way to bring your carpets back to life once a year.
