What are some reasons you would want to buy a steam cleaner?

Some would say they’re ideal for eliminating allergens, dust mites and mold spores from drapes, carpeting and upholstered furniture. If that’s you then a steam cleaner may do the trick!

They can also make short work of stubborn stains. You might think of it as melting stains away with hot, dry vapor.

It can help you clean those hard to reachable places too. So you can disinfect and get rid of foul odors from your floors, drapes and toilet seats without breaking a sweat. All it takes is water. And you’re well on your way to cleaning without using harmful chemicals. Just remember that heat can melt plastics and paint. So go easy on them.

How does a steam cleaner work? Its pretty simple really. It has a water reservoir with a heating element to boil the water. The result? You get steam that is delivered through a tube. All that’s left if to unleash it on the dirt and stains. The combination of heat and steam under pressure is very cleansing.

Usually steam cleaners are about the size of a canister vac. And while hand held models are easy to operate, they are best suited for smaller jobs. Often making them more hassle than they are worth.

If you’re thinking one of these is worthwhile then be sure to check for certain features.

Let’s start with on/off switch. Handy if it’s on the wand because then it is easier to access as opposed to being on the unit itself.

What are the accessories that come with the unit? A jet nozzle, hand held and floor brush are pretty common. Other tools and brushes might also be included.

What’s the water capacity? Since these are pressurized machines, if you’re short on capacity, well, that means when the steam runs out you’ll have to wait for the machine to cool down before you can safely refill. Which can become a pain if you have to do that too often.

How fast does it heat up? Somewhere between six to ten minutes is acceptable.

What’s the boiler made of? Stainless steel is rust proof and hence preferable.

Is the cord long enough to allow you to work without having to constantly find the nearest outlet?

Limited storage space? Don’t worry more compact models are available.

Keep in mind that while steam cleaners are decent enough for cleaning carpets and surfaces laden with grit and dirt sometimes they can leave behind a mess which can be a headache in itself to clean up.

Again the biggest drawback is that the steam run short after a relatively few minutes of use. Then you’ll have to take a break to give the machine as long a half an hour to cool down before you can refill the reservoir safely.

Still steam cleaners do have their place. So if you are convinced that you can’t live without one go ahead and see how clean your home can be.
