Many people have a difficult time getting their windows really clean. Much of the time this is because they lack knowledge and the proper techniques, and they don’t have the right cleaning supplies that are needed to get the job done. The professional janitorial services use certain supplies for a reason — because they work.
Use Lots of Water: Use plenty of water to get rid of the dirt that accumulates on the outside of your windows. You should be a little more careful inside as you don’t want a water puddle on your floor. Water remains one of the best cleaning agents, and it is environmentally friendly.
Use the Right Tools: You can choose to use a squeegee like the professionals or you could use one of the microfiber cloths or rags that also work fairly well. A squeegee will require that you use soap, but with a microfiber rag you can just use plain water.
Use Clean Tools: No matter which tool you use, make sure it is clean before you use it. Dirty sponges, applicators, squeegees and cleaners will leave dirt behind on a window. You should also rinse your equipment frequently when you clean more than one window. Don’t carry the dirt over to the next one you’ll be working on.
The Right Time of Day: Do not wash your windows in full sunlight because you might have problems with streaking caused by the temperature of the glass. Wash the windows that get morning sun in the afternoon, and wash the windows that get afternoon sun in the morning. I know this divides the job into two, but most of us have too many windows to do at one time anyway.
Squeegee technique 1: Always move the squeegee at an angle, so the water can run down the glass. If you don’t aim the rubber this way you will create streaks. Just watch a pro if you get a chance and you will know what I mean.
Squeegee technique 2: Always have a rag available to clean the rubber blade of the squeegee after each stroke. That will remove access water from the blade which would just leave marks on the water the next time you set it one the window.
Squeegee technique 3: The most important technique is to overlap the strokes. If you cut the strokes to close, you might miss a spot and will leave a water mark on the window.
Squeegee Lesson 4: Horizontal strokes are more effective than vertical strokes. This is because water runs down due to gravity. It is easier to systematically clean windows when you use horizontal strokes. Just wipe off your strokes’ end lines with a cloth or microfiber to get rid of the water marks.
Microfiber: I personally prefer this technique as there is no specific technique that you have to learn. Just use plenty of water and you will get crystal clear windows again.
Secret Tip: If for some reason you can’t get your windows really clean, just rub your dry windows with dry newspaper. Not the cleanest thing to do, but it really works. Even for cars.
